Davenport Tops Valvoline Iron-Man Late Model Northern Series “The Return” at West Virginia Motor Speedway

MINERAL WELLS, WEST VIRGINIA (April 25, 2021)– The Valvoline Iron-Man Late Model Northern Series would begin its 2021 racing season with “The Return” at West Virginia Motor Speedway in Mineral Wells, WV on Sunday and Jonathan Davenport of Blairsville, GA would grab the lead late in the race and hold off a late charge from Devin Moran to score the victory and $8,000 payday.

The victory by 37-year old Davenport would be his third career Valvoline Iron-Man Late Model Series triumph and would come behind the wheel of the Lance Landers owned Longhorn Chassis with a Clements Race Engine and receiving sponsorship from Nutrien Ag Solutions, ASC Warranty, Spartan Mowers, Fatheads Eyewear, Mega Plumbing of the Carolina, and Bilstein.

Devin Moran would take the lead at the start of the main event, followed by Colton Flinner, Tyler Erb, and Drake Troutman, while ninth-place starting Jonathan Davenport would be fifth by the end of the first lap. Moran would set sail out front, while Davenport would work past Troutman for fourth on lap three. Moran would start working slower traffic by lap six, while Davenport would run down third-place running Erb and would challenge for the spot on lap eleven and take the position one circuit later. The first caution of the race would wave on lap thirteen for Jason Salmons, who spun his machine exiting turn four. Back underway, Moran would maintain the lead, with Flinner, Davenport, and Erb in tow, while Dustin Nobbe would take fifth from Troutman. Davenport would squeeze under Flinner for second on lap fourteen and would begin to chase down Moran for the lead and the pair would get set to work traffic, the caution would appear for Tristan Chamberlain’s spun entry in turn one. While under the caution, race leader Moran would pit with a flat left-rear tire and that would give the lead to Davenport, but before the race would restart, Davenport would pit with a flat right-rear tire. This turn of events would give Erb the race lead, with Moran restarting fifth and Davenport sixth and the rear of the lead lap cars. Only one more lap would completed after the restart when Freddie Carpenter slowed on the frontchute with a flat right-rear tire and would be done for the night. The restart would see Erb maintain the lead, while Davenport would get back to second and begin to mount a charge on Erb for the lead. Davenport and Erb would be neck and neck until disaster struck Erb when the center of his left rear wheel broke as he exited turn two to draw the final caution of the race, setting up a green/white/checkered finish. Davenport would inherit the lead at this point and would keep Moran at bay the final two circuits to score the win, with Moran taking second and Troutman finishing third. Flinner and Ed Shuman would complete the top five. The remainder of the top ten finishers would be Erb, Richie Edwards, Jason Salmons, Freddie Carpenter, and Dustin Nobbe.

The next events for the Valvoline Iron-Man Late Model Northern Series will be at Atomic Speedway in Waverly, OH for the Dan Reno/Jackie Boggs Memorial on Friday May 7 and Saturday May 8. The Friday May 7 event will pay $5,000 to win, with the Saturday May 8 event paying $13,004 to win
