Devin Gilpin Grabs Valvoline Iron-Man Late Model Series Johnny Wheeler Memorial at Lake Cumberland Speedway

BURNSIDE, KENTUCKY (May 22, 2021)– The Valvoline Iron-Man Late Model Series Northern and Southern divisions would both be in competition on Saturday evening at Lake Cumberland Speedway in Burnside, KY for the track’s 4th Annual Johnny Wheeler Memorial and Devin Gilpin of Columbus, IN would lead all forty laps of the event and score the $5,031 payday.

For the 30-year old Gilpin, the win would be his first career victory with the Valvoline Iron-Man Late Model Series and would come aboard a Rocket Chassis with a Jay Dickens Race Engine with sponsorship from Jason Clarkson Logging, Ind-Sol Tech, South Central Roofing, DASCO Race Supply, Blondie’s Pizzeria, Reliable Insulation Service, and Right Auto Parts and Machine.

Devin Gilpin would grab the race lead at the start of the event, followed by Zack Dohm, Jared Hawkins, Dustin Linville, and Dillon Crim. Jensen Ford would make his way into the top five past Crim on lap three prior to the only caution of the event waving on lap five for a six-car tangle in turn one that saw Crim, David Webb, and Phil Helton be finished for the night. Gilpin would maintain the lead on the restart, while Hawkins would take second place from Dohm, while Linville and Ford settled into a battle for the fourth position. Gilpin would stretch his lead a bit as would start working lapped traffic on lap sixteen. Meanwhile, Linville would win the battle for fourth with Ford and close in on Dohm for the third position and grab the spot on lap twenty-two. Linville would continue to charge and would run down Hawkins and snatch the second position on lap twenty-seven, with Ford working past Dohm for the fourth position one lap later. Gilpin would continue to hold the lead at this point, but Linville would mount a charge on Gilpin and would close in the Gilpin’s back bumper by lap thirty-five. Gilpin would be able to put a lapped car between himself and Linville with just over two laps to go and this would give Gilpin the breathing room he needed to secure the victory. Linville would finish second, with Hawkins taking third, while Ford and Dohm completed the top five. Michael Chilton would finish sixth, with Tommy Bailey, Justin Rattliff, Ryan King, and Dustin Nobbe completing the top ten.

The next event for the Valvoline Iron-Man Late Model Northern Series will be at Muskingum County Speedway in Zanesville, OH on Saturday May 29 for the 39th Annual Jim Dunn Memorial paying $10,000 to win. The next event for the Valvoline Iron-Man Late Model Southern Series will be at 411 Motor Speedway in Seymour, TN on Monday May 31 for the 9th Annual Scott Sexton Memorial paying $10,052 to win, with this event being co-sanctioned with the Schaeffer’s Oil Spring Nationals Series.
