Rice Nips Moran in Valvoline Iron-Man Late Model Northern Series Atomic 100 Weekend Opener

WAVERLY, OHIO (June 25, 2021)– The Valvoline Iron-Man Late Model Series Northern Series would be in action for the opening night of the Atomic 100 presented by DirtonDirt.com weekend on Friday evening and Josh Rice of Verona, KY would lead the final two circuits of the race and repel Devin Moran to score the $4,000 victory.

The win for the 22-year old second-generation driver would be his second career Valvoline Iron-Man Late Model victory and would come behind the wheel of a Rocket Chassis with a Jay Dickens Race Engine and carry sponsorship from Sunesis Holdings, Blox Spiced Ice, ATC Bolts and Fasteners, Base Racing Fuel, Rice Brothers Racing, Maxwell Trucking, Extreme Sportswear Sales, Valvoline, Integra Shocks, and Slicker Graphics.

Devin Moran would jump to the early lead in the 40-lap, $4,000 to win feature contest, with Josh Rice, Jared Hawkins, R.J. Conley, and Andy Bond giving chase. The front four would remain the same while Tyler Carpenter would pressure Bond for the fifth position and take it on lap five. The first caution would appear when Dave Hornikel and Kody Evans would tangle in turn three and end up as a red flag when Evans mount would do a slow rollover, with Evans emerging from the car all right. The restart would also see the caution wave when Shannon Thornsberry would slow on the backchute. This restart would see Moran, Rice, and Hawkins stay first through third, while Carpenter would take fourth and bring Doug Drown along in fifth. Caution would wave once again for Thornsberry, who would be slowed this time and stopped in turn four. The front trio again remained the same, while Drown would sneak past Carpenter for fourth, only to have Carpenter reclaim the spot one tour later. Meanwhile, fourteenth-place starting Devin Gilpin would drive by Drown and get fourth from Carpenter on lap 14. Moran and Rice would distance themselves from the field at this point in the race, but Gilpin would chase down third place Hawkins and take the third position on lap nineteen. Moran and Rice would start working slower traffic at this point, while Carpenter and Hawkins would battle for the fourth position, with Carpenter winning the battle for good on lap twenty-four. The final caution of the race would appear for debris on the track in turn three on lap twenty-eight. Moran would still hold the lead and would away a bit, but Rice would begin to mount one final charge on lap thirty-six and as the pair completed lap thirty-eight, Rice would dive under Moran for the lead in turns one and two, with the pair racing for the lead down the backchute coming to the white flag. Rice would hold a narrow margin at the start/finish and hold Moran off on the final lap to secure the victory. Moran would settle for second, with Gilpin completing the podium finishers in third. Tyler Carpenter and Hawkins would complete the top five. The remainder of the top ten finishers would be Drown, Dustin Nobbe, Henry Hornsby III, Clint Keenan, and Ted Nobbe.
