Rod Conley Captures Valvoline Iron-Man Late Model Northern Series Atomic 100 Weekend Finale

WAVERLY, OHIO (May 8, 2021)– The Valvoline Iron-Man Late Model Northern Series would conclude the Atomic 100 weekend presented by DirtonDirt.com on Saturday evening at Atomic Speedway in Waverly, OH and thirteenth-place starter Rod Conley of Wheelersburg, OH would take the lead on lap forty-nine and drive away to the $12,000 victory.

The win by the 59-year old Conley would be his first career victory with the Valvoline Iron-Man Late Model Series and would see Conley’s Rocket Chassis, Draime Racing Engines powered entry take the win with sponsorship from Conley Trucking, Conley River Terminal, Poske’s Performance Parts, Shain Custom Decals, Impact RaceGear, and Sunoco Race Fuels.

After a couple of early cautions, Devin Moran would take the race lead to get the event underway, with Josh Rice, Tyler Erb, R.J. Conley, and Jared Hawkins in pursuit. Caution would again on lap four when Doug Drown would spin in turn four and once racing resumed, Moran held the lead, with Erb taking second from Rice, while Hawkins would take fourth and Tyler Carpenter would claim fifth. Carpenter would take fourth from Hawkins on lap seven and the caution would wave one lap later when third-place running Rice would make contact with the outside wall in turn one and would slow on the backchute and would eventually pull pitside. Moran would still hold the lead on the restart, with Erb, Carpenter, Hawkins, and R.J. Conley second through fifth. Jamie Lawson would spin in turn four to draw the next caution and the restart would see the top five remain the same until the next caution waved on lap sixteen after Jerry Bowersock would make contact with the outside wall in turn two. This restart would see the front three remain the same, with Henry Hornsby III taking fourth and shuffling Hawkins to fifth. After another caution slowed the action, the front five would remain the same until Clint Keenan slowed in turn three to slow the action once again. The restart would see the top five stay the same until lap twenty-six when Todd Brennan would take fifth from Hawkins and the caution would wave on lap twenty-nine when Devin Gilpin would slow on the track with a flat right-rear tire. Moran would again maintain the lead, with Erb continuing to give chase, while Carpenter would pressure Erb for second, but Erb would suffer a flat right-rear tire on lap thirty-eight and draw another caution flag. This restart would see Moran still out front, with Carpenter now second and Hornsby III in third, Hawkins fourth, and Rod Conley would now be in fifth and by lap forty-one, Conley would be in third. After two more cautions, Conley would take second from Carpenter on a lap forty-seven restart and Gilpin would take fourth and charging back up to the front after his lap twenty-nine flat tire. Conley would make a move on Moran for the lead and take the top spot on lap forty-nine and proceed to pull away from Moran, who would draw the final cuation on lap forty-two. Conley would pull away from the field on the final restart, while Erb would make his way back into the top five on lap fifty-three. Conley would continue to drive away in the final laps of the event and see the checkered flag first, with Gilpin ending up in the runner-up position, while Erb would make a turn four, last lap pass to finish third. Hawkins would finish fourth, while Dustin Nobbe would nip Henry Hornsby III at the stripe for fifth. Trailing Hornsby III to complete the top ten would be R.J. Conley, Todd Brennan, Moran, and Carpenter.

The next event for the Valvoline Iron-Man Late Model Northern Series will be at Lake Cumberland Speedway in Burnside, KY on Sunday July 4, paying $5,000 to win. The event is a points event for the Northern and Southern divisions of the Valvoline Iron-Man Late Model Series.
