Michael Chilton Charges to Valvoline Iron-Man Late Model Northern Series Johnny Mulligan Classic
JUNCTION CITY, KENTUCKY (July 23, 2021)– The Valvoline Iron-Man Late Model Northern Series would see its travel take the tour to Ponderosa Speedway in Junction City, KY on Friday evening for the inaugural Johnny Mulligan Classic and Michael Chilton of Salvisa, KY would take the lead on lap fifteen and survive a late-race caution to taking the victory and score the $10,000 payday.
The win by the 35-year old Chilton was his first of the season with the tour and his fourth career Valvoline Iron-Man Late Model Series victory and would come behind the wheel of his Rocket Chassis powered by a Bullock Race Engine and carries sponsorship from MKC Transport, C and C Redi-Mix, Caton Industrial Painting, Parkview Home Center, Edgewood Homes, Dial Painting, Irvin Enterprises, Budda Bert Transmission Sales and Service, and Brucebilt Performance.
Billy Moyer, Jr. would take the lead at the Johnny Mulligan Classic, followed by Michael Chilton, Jared Hawkins, Josh Putnam, and Dustin Linville. Moyer, Jr. and Chilton would quickly put some distance on third place running Hawkins, while Josh Rice would take fifth from Linville on lap six. Moyer, Jr. and Chilton would start working traffic on lap eight and continued to motor away from Hawkins, while Rice would grab fourth from Putnam on lap ten. The front duo of Moyer, Jr. and Chilton would get into heavier traffic on lap twelve and Chilton would make his move entering turn one on lap fifteen and would fire the slidejob pass on Moyer, Jr. to take the race lead. Rice would continue his charge and would make a two-for-one pass when he got Hawkins and Moyer, Jr. to take second on lap sixteen. The first caution of the race waved on lap twenty-one for debris in turn two. The restart would see Chilton and Rice now be first and second, with Moyer, Jr. third, while Linville would go from sixth to fourth, with Hawkins fifth. Zack Dohm would begin to charge at this point also and would make his way into the top five past Hawkins lap twenty-four, while Linville would pressure Moyer, Jr. for third and would take the spot on lap twenty-six. Chilton would start working lapped on lap twenty-eight, while Dohm would take fourth from Moyer, Jr. on lap twenty-nine. Chilton work slower traffic to perfection and would stretch his lead over Rice, while fourteenth-place starter Justin Rattliff would also charge toward the front and would take fifth after a three-wide battle on lap thirty-nine from Moyer, Jr. Chilton would continue to pull away from Rice at this point until the final caution waved on lap forty-seven when Moyer, Jr. would slow on the frontchute and be finished for the night. While the caution was out, second-place Rice would pull into the work with a flat left-rear tire and would change it and return to action. This would put Linville into second behind Chilton and Linville would look under Chilton on the restart, but Chilton would maintain his advantage and keep Linville at bay to claim the win, with Linville finishing second and Dohm claiming third. Rattliff would finish fourth, with Rice recovering to finish fifth. Kyle Strickler would finish sixth after making heavy contact with the outside wall coming to the checkered flag, while Hawkins, David Webb, Stephen Breeding, and Colton Flinner would complete the top ten.
The next event for the Valvoline Iron-Man Late Model Northern Series will be at Muskingum County Speedway in Zanesville, OH on Saturday July 24. The event is the 39th Annual Jim Dunn Memorial, paying $10,000 to win.
