Iron-Man Late Model Series

Madden Now Two for Three in Karl Kustoms Bristol Dirt Nationals at Bristol Motor Speedway

BRISTOL, TENNESSEE (April 1, 2022)– The Valvoline Iron-Man Late Model Southern Series would co-sanction with the XR Super Series for the third of four events of the 2022 Karl Kustoms Bristol Dirt Nationals at Bristol Motor Speedway in Bristol, TN and Chris Madden of Gray Court, SC would score his second win of the four-race series and would lay claim to another $50,000 payday.

The win by the 46-year-old would be his third career Valvoline Iron-Man Late Model Series victory and second of the 2022 racing season. Madden’s winning effort would come aboard a Rocket Chassis powered by a Durham Race Engine with sponsorship from Drydene Engine Oils, Drydene Racing Formulas, Henderson Amusements, Millwood Plumbing, Franklin Enterprises, Davis Diesel Service, Worley Monument, Pyramid Materials, VP Racing Fuels, and Penske Racing Shocks.

The drop of the green flag on the fifty-lap contest would see outside polesitter Chris Madden jump to the race lead, with Mike Marlar, Ricky Weiss, Brandon Sheppard, and Scott Bloomquist running in positions two through five. The front five would remain the same as Madden would set a rapid pace at the point and would start working slower traffic by lap eight. The first of only two cautions in the event would wave on lap eleven for debris on the backstretch and on the restart, Madden would maintain the lead, followed by Marlar, Weiss, and Sheppard, while Devin Moran would make his way past Bloomquist for the fifth position. The race would only stay green for two more circuits when the final caution of the race was displayed on lap thirteen when second-place running Marlar would make heavy contact with the outside retaining wall in turn three, ending his night. Madden would again maintain the lead on the restart, with Weiss now in second, Sheppard third, Moran fourth, and Kyle Larson would now be in fifth. Larson’s fifth place standing would be short-lived as Bloomquist would retake the position from Larson on lap fifteen. Madden would continue to pull away from the field, while Bloomquist, Larson, and Chris Ferguson would begin a three-way battle for the fifth position, with Ferguson taking the position on lap nineteen. Madden would catch the rear of the field again by lap twenty-three, but would have a hard time working past the slower traffic in front of him, allowing Weiss to close narrow Madden’s almost four second advantage to just over 1.4 seconds by lap thirty. Madden would finally work past the pair of slower cars on lap thirty-two and get some clear track in front of him and once again pull away from Weiss. Meanwhile, Bloomquist and Larson would be engaged in a great battle for the sixth position, with Larson beginning to make the upper groove of the racing surface work for him. Ferguson would also begin to flex some muscle at this point as he would move up to the upper groove as well and would take fourth from Moran on lap forty-one and third from Sheppard two tours later on lap forty-three. Madden would continue to maintain a comfortable lead at this point, while Moran would claim third from Weiss on lap forty-four, with Ferguson and Moran battling for third by lap forty-six, with the pair working past Weiss on lap forty-eight. Madden would be unchallenged and see the checkered flag first, with Ferguson winding up in the runner-up slot, with Moran completing the podium finishers in third. Larson would rim-ride his way to a fourth-place finish, while Weiss would complete the top five. The remainder of the top ten finishers would be Bloomquist, Dale McDowell, Jonathan Davenport, Sheppard, and Earl Pearson, Jr.

The next event for the Valvoline Iron-Man Late Model Southern Series will be on Saturday April 2 at Bristol Motor Speedway in Bristol, TN to conclude the 2022 Karl Kustoms Bristol Dirt Nationals. The event will be co-sanctioned with the XR Super Series and the feature event will pay $50,000 to win.
